Old Hickory 5-19-11

Old Hickory

Went to the Hick on Thursday, May 19. Got on the water a bit late, around 6:30 am. It was cloudy which persisted most of the day. Fished mostly in Spencer Creek. Water was about 63.Threw a topwater for a while but not hits, not counting bream nudges. Finally caught a 13 inch on a mojo fluke rig about 7:15. About an hour later caught another 13 inch on the same rig. Got on an good emerging grass bed and switched to my standby, Ultra Vibe Speed worm again mojo rigged. Got several blowups and hard strikes but could not hook up. Left Spencer and caught a nice 2lber off a fallen green tree on the main lake. Went down lake just past the power lines to a cove with good emerging grass. Stopped to talk with a local fisherman that said he fishes 5-6 days a week. He only had 3 fish, 1 keeper. Said he usually has 20-25 by noon. He said 2-3 days ago the water temp was 68 and in this cove and on the main river, the temp was 58, a 10 degree drop. It really seemed to affect the fish.

I didn't get a bite in the cove. Got back on the river and decided I didn't care to run the river with all the debris and logs and such floating. Went back into Spencer which had by now moved to 64-65 degrees. Caught a couple of more in the grass bed from earlier including one about 2.5 lbs on the Speed worm. Caught 1 other dink and called it a day. Not the best day I ever had but not the worst.  First time I have had my boat in the water since April 2.
