Old Hickory 6-18-2011
After the last few reports of limited success, I am pleased to report this trip was more satisfying. Our club F-3 was fishing a tournament with 5 boats. My partner, Carl, and i launched from Davis Corner ramp on Old Hickory at safe light, motored a short distance up Spencer Creek to a large grass bed. Carl lost a nice keeper bass on his fifth cast. A few minutes later he lost another. Things looked good except I couldn't get a bite. In fact, we caught none in the big grass bed.
Motored on up to the mouth of Spencer to a point with grass. I caught a nice 15" keeper, lost another and Carl had a good bite. We moved down lake a short distance to cove with 2 arms. One side has an excellent grass bed that I have had some success with in the past. First cast produced my second keeper. I caught 2 more keepers and Carl caught 1. I caught mine on a Zoom Ultra Vibe Speed worm (Candy Bug) and Carl caught his on a Swim bait by Lake Fork.
We moved back up the lake and fished the bank and some tiny inlets by the Boy Scout camp. At the mouth of one of the inlets I caught a 4.5 bass on a KVD 1.5 square bill crank bait (bluegill). Caught a few more dinks here and watched as the sky turned dark as a storm approached. We headed back to Spencer Creek. Just as we turned into the creek the rain started. We spotted a private marina with several boat slips. Just as moved into the slip the bottom dropped out, the wind came up the storm unleashed its fury on us. We sat for an hour until the lightning stopped. Fished a drop in the Creek and picked up one more keeper on a jig that culled a smaller one. Caught a couple of more dinks and decided to load up.
I was fortunate to win today's tournament with 10.67 pounds and the 4.5 was the big fish for the day. Fun day in spite of the storm and continued rain. Most every one caught at least one or more fish. Not a bad tournament.
