Kentucky Lake - July 20, 2011

The heat index at Camden, TN was 111 degrees. I met my fishing friend Doyal from Memphis at 5:30 am at the New Johnsonville ramp. We launched quickly and prepared to bass fish in the forthcoming heat.  By the time we pulled out about 3:45 we were boiled, baked, sauteed, fricasseed and crispy fried. But…. we did catch fish.

As we motored out the canal to the river, we turned left and went down to the point of the island, maybe 200 yards. We then fished the back side of the island and then moved to the river side of the island back to the point then turning back and fished to the canal again. By 10 am we had caught about 26 bass including a number of 2- 2.5 fish. I also caught a 5.25 bass. All of these fish were caught in 2-4 feet of water. Doyal and I started out with buzzbaits. We had several blowups or swirls but no fish. I finally switched to my old favorite, a mojo rigged speed worm in candy bug color. I started catching fish. Doyal stayed with buzzer a little longer finally picking up one but I was beginning to pile up numbers. He soon switched. I stayed with the speed worm a while including the big fish. I then switched to mojo rigged fluke in green pumpkin magic. I caught all of my bass on these two baits. Doyal, on the other hand caught them on a buzzbait, crankbait, spinnerbait, speed worm and lizard. Whatever it takes. We figured we had used less than a pint of gas so far. We then made a run north. Doyal picked up a couple of fish around some moored barges. We went on up to Little Dry Creek catching another couple of fish. By 3 pm we both hit the wall and decided to head out. We had a total of 30 bass, 16 for me and 14 for Doyal. Most were keepers. we had maybe 4-5 squeakers, a very nice day. My best 5 would have been 14+.

We saw a raccoon that followed us along the bank for a while. Saw at least 6 ospreys (fish eagles) and one bald eagle. I saw a deer on the way home.

We stopped at the little cafe next to the Anchor Inn and had a bite of lunch and a gallon of tea. All in all a very nice day even with the heat.
