Percy Priest 8-27-10

Why don't I learn. 2010 has not been my year for catching fish. If not for Lake Fork I would have no good fish (4-6 lbs) this year. It was not to be yesterday at Priest. I was on the lake at 5:30 not quite safe light but off I went to Spring Creek. Caught 3 dinks before the sun came up. Then went fishless for the next couple of hours. Finally caught a 2.5 lb on a jig. Another couple of hours go by until I caught a 3/4 lb crappie. Not another fish until I came off the lake at 2:30. Fished from Spring Creek up to Bryant Creek and behind the island near 4 corners and lots of spots in between. Did not see a single school of fish, any kind, surfacing. I really expected to see schools up at the confluence of Spring, West Fork and Stone river. I heard a report that there are schools of bass and hybrids coming up at Long Hunter early but of course I put in at Stewart's Creek. Oh well. I will keep trying.

Ky Lake at New Johnsonville 8-23-2010

My summer fishing has been pretty much a bust. I blame it on the intense heat, fronts, winds, floods and global warming. Went to Ky. Lake Monday with friend Earl. On the lake around 6 am. First stop north of ramp usually has some action. We got nothing. Motored to the next creek and fished grassy areas with no results. We actually spoke to a fishermen at MacDonald's in Buffalo that had fished on Saturday. He said they caught a lot of fish but not many keepers and caught them in the grass. That's why we worked in the creeks. Didn't see any schooling but I did see a lot of shad. I might mention there was a small front that passed through Sun. night and left us with high blue sky and a north wind 5-10. (That's my excuse).

We moved to the next creek north and fished grass with no results. We then moved out to the ledge and threw deep cranks and c-rigs. No results. We then ran south to the grassy areas at the entrance to Birdsong creeks. I finally caught 2 bass, 1 a 2 pounder, the other about a pound. Earl caught 3 including a couple of 1.5 pounders. Caught all on blackberry speed worm. I broke off 2 fish but not sure whether they were good ones or just bad line. Suspect bad line.

I believe we could have more success on the ledges but I honestly don't have any spots located other than the one place we tried. And the wind made it tough to stay on the spots. I just need more ledge spots. Any coordinates offered out there?

Even though it began to get hot around noon, it was pretty pleasant with the breeze. We pulled out about 2 pm and stopped at the truck stop in Buffalo to get an ice cream bar (Cherry Garcia). Until another day.

Old Hickory 8-14-2010

Talk about Hot, today was a real scorcher. Our club blasted off about 5:20 waiting for first light. My partner, Carl Appelt and I began fishing a few willow grass clumps with no success. We then moved to a flat with a nice drop off. I caught 4 fish in about 20 minutes on a Little John crankbait. 2 were 10" bass, a 14" catfish and a 16" largemouth (2.25). After that it got really slow. We fished c-rigs, t-rigs, crankbaits, jigs, worms with no success. Finally caught a 8" on a worm with about 15 minutes to go. Carl picked up a small bream with a jig, belly hooked. When we put the boat on the trailer, I really had a sinking spell. I think the heat finally got to me. I recovered quickly with a sandwich and strawberry shake at Wendys. Congrats to Ron for a nice catch on a really tough day. And congrats to Lawrence on an 18.75 big fish. I'll be really glad when this heat wave breaks.
