Old Hickory 11-9-12

Old Hickory 11-9-12

I am truly a glutton for punishment when it comes to fishing. I headed for Old Hickory at 9:00 am after filling my boat with no ethanol gas. Launched the boat at 10 am. I knew I was in for tough day when my boat drifted into walk rails on the dock. I could see it happening in slow motion but I couldn't stop it. Snapped the blade of my trolling motor like a potato chip. Fortunately I do carry a spare so the trip was not spoiled...yet.

I started in Spencer Creek throwing KVD 1.0 square bill and Rapala DT 6. Moved down lake to pockets off the main lake including a back slough with no bites. Headed back up river to the scout camp fishing wood with cranks and a finesse worm. Nothing. Decided a hamburger at Flipper's might improve my outlook. Hamburger was good but did nothing for my outlook. Fished a couple of pockets off the river. Fished the opening and the bay under the power lines with nary a bite. Saw a few shad flipping for the first time today but no bass busting.

Headed back to Spencer Creek to finish the day. Fished one of my favorite banks to no avail. Finally fished a cove close to the ramp and caught a nit about the size of a Lucky 13 on a SBFW (smoking blue finesse worm). First bite of the day 3:35pm. Figured it was time to go home.

Saturday morning went to Clark Marine for a tackle flea market. Lot of good bargains available. I picked up a Calcutta 200 reel for $45. I plan to use it for throwing umbrella rigs.

I am hoping to get another trip or two before the end of the year weather permitting.

Kentucky Lake 11-2-12

Kentucky Lake 11-2-12

Lazy this morning. Left Franklin at 7:45 am. Stopped at the Cajun Corner in Waverly for a sausage biscuit and launched at Mason's dock in Richland Creek. The water is really, really low, barely a foot and half at the ramp. Headed across the creek to a spot I will call the "Hole". It's sort of a circle with several stake beds and a bunch of shad. My first catch of several was a skip jack over 14" long. They are wild fighters. Caught a nice 2.5 lb bass on a 1.0 Squarebill. Lost a couple of more bass and caught a couple more skippies. Made a run down to Nathan Bedford park and fished several grass patches and a flat with no success. Few more stops then back to the Hole. Took about a thousand casts but I did pick up a few more bass and ... Skippies. I wound up with 8 bass with 5 club keepers, 2 2.5's, 1 2.75, 1 1.25 & 1 1lb along with half a dozen Skipjacks.

Ran into Rob and saw him catch a 2 lb in the Hole. He said he had caught several out on the river including a 4 lber. He is preparing for a tournament on Saturday.

It wasn't a great day but was the best I have had in several past trips so it was most enjoyable.
